For my first Makeup #TipTuesday series, I would like to speak on one of my most requested teachings, how to apply the perfect wing to your eyes. Winged eyeliner is not easy to achieve if you are a beginner and you are bound to make a TON of mistakes. Just keeping it real! In fact, to this day, I still make mistakes - just being honest. However, I know how to correct them, but we will save that at another time. From years of practice, trial and error, I finally know how to create a wing that works best for my eyes. If you are a beginner, grab a pen, paper and take notes.
First things first... Do NOT use a liquid eyeliner!
Again this is for the beginner. If you have never tried or attempted to try it on a few occasions but failed miserably then reread what I just mentioned. DO NOT USE LIQUID EYELINER! The reason I say this is because the consistency of liquid eyeliner is thin and once it is applied to your eyelid, well it dries instantly, and it's hard to remove. Why? Because the product is light. I recommend that you use an eyeliner gel. A good product to practice with is NYX Gel Liner and Smudger. It is affordable, and you can find it at Target, Ulta, or www.nyxcosmetics.com. It is easy to apply with and to remove. Another good product to use is e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner. It is only $3.00! Secondly, use a small angled brush. It may seem harder than the liquid eyeliner, but it is much easier. You have to trust yourself. A good brush to use is e.l.f. small angled brush. It is only $3.00, and it works well. You can purchase the brush at Target, Walmart, and TJ Maxx/Marshalls. If you are unable to find this particular brush, make sure the brush you use is more firm than soft. This will provide better control while applying the liner to your eye.
Remember: You want to perfect your wing so it is good to practice with less expensive products. The last thing you want to do is spend a fortune on more specialty products. Just think as if you are practicing for a sport, in the beginning, you are not practicing with premier products, you are learning the basics. Same concept.
How to apply the liner:
Most people tend to think you begin at the inner corner of your eye and draw the liner across your whole lid and wing it out. This is wrong! If you believe that this is how it is applied, then you will never graduate to 201, lol! Seriously, that is not how you apply the liner. You will be a beginner forever!
Begin at the middle of your eye. Use the angle as a guide to follow the shape of your eyelid. Staying as close to your lashline as possible, you must make small strokes towards the inner corner of your eye, connecting the line. Once you complete the first half of your eye, dip your brush in the gel for more product and draw small strokes towards the outer corner of your eye. I would stop right before the edge of the outer corner of your eye.
Here's the tricky part, but I will make it easy for you. Use one of these three tips.
- Tip #1 use masking tape. Take a small piece of tape and place it right under your bottom lash line to angle upward towards the tail of your eyebrow.
- Tip #2 use the edge of a sheet of paper towel. Hold it the same direction where you would place the tape.
- Tip #3 use a stencil. Various stencils will guide you while drawing your wing.
Use the edge of either the tape, paper towel or stencil to create the line. Once the line is created, you want to connect the line to the outer point of the initial line, almost creating a small triangle. Dip your brush back in the gel to grab a little more product and fill in the line (triangle). Viola! You should now have a small wing. If you do not have a wing, use makeup remover to take off the liner and try again. Keep trying until you become familiar with your eye and feel comfortable applying the gel to your eye.
I hope my tips will help you practice with applying a winged eyeliner. I know it is hard reading and trying to take in what I am telling you. Trust me, I am working on getting my YouTube tutorials up and running soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions or you would like to share your experience, feel free to leave a comment below, and I will answer. Good luck!

Self-care is important. Today, I made it a priority to take care of me, Jennifer J. This past week has been stressful, between working my full-time job, managing my business, and other personal endeavors was enough. Saturday, I spent a day of enjoying Atlanta, but the pollen is something else!
